No Snowflake in an Avalanche ever feels Responsible
- Voltaire (1694–1778)
The phrase is quite of a metaphorical statement that fascinates me, particularly about perspectives on responsibility and collective actions.
In a literal sense, an avalanche occurs when a mass of snow on a mountainside starts sliding down rapidly, gathering more snow and becoming an unstoppable force. Each individual snowflake in the avalanche is indistinguishable and insignificant compared to the overall destructive power of the avalanche.
Metaphorically, when a large-scale event or problem occurs, individuals often feel disconnected from the consequences or they just fail to recognize their role in contributing to the situation. Each person may consider their own actions or choices as small and insignificant, believing that they alone cannot make a significant impact or be held responsible for the overall outcome.
In reality, people often dissociate themselves from collective responsibilities, and they blame the situations or other people instead of acknowledging their own influence.
They’re often not personally accountable and overlook their individual actions that create a large problem.
Overall, this is a cautionary reminder to recognize the collective impact of individual actions and encourages taking responsibility for one’s own part in shaping the outcomes, even when it seems insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
